Village Appearance - Woodland walk

It has been most rewarding to hear all the positive comments about our latest achievement – the Woodland Pathway on Wrenshot Lane.  Work started here at the beginning of August, and was completed before school started in September.

This was the muddy track before the path was put in place.

Already it looks like a well established path, with children using it as a route to and from school and walkers taking advantage of a ‘mud free’ zone.  Apart from the new grass edging the path, wildflower seeds, to cater for both woodland and wetter areas, will be sown in October, together with five field maple trees. The Cheshire railings have also been extended with a safety barrier at the Pheasant Walk end.

The walk has now been further enhanced by planting of spring bulbs by the students from High Legh Primary School.  Look out for a magnificent display in spring.

Our grateful thanks must go to the following organisations for their financial support, as without this, the project would still only be a proposal from the Parish Plan.  They are:-

CEC Public Rights of Way

Manchester Airport Community Trust Fund

High Legh Parish Council

Our Sunday Tea customers

We are also indebted to the following people who have willingly given of their time and expertise to bring this project to fruition:-

Marianne Dobson and Richard Cornwall Legh who drew up the original plans; Marianne who has masterminded the project and been responsible for contacting and liaising with all the relevant agencies;

John Cope, our group secretary and key organiser.

Perhaps our most trying project has been the Memorial Garden around the commemorative trees on the Belfry. As a result of the lovely, dry summer, our original crop of wild flowers failed to germinate and will therefore be re-sown early in October.

Since the beginning of the year, we have also been busy in other areas of the village. Although we are a small group, our activities are wide ranging to include litter picking, sign cleaning, mowing and pruning.  I would like to publically thank Celia Critchley, Frank Henderson, Ann Woolf, Chris Marsland, Colin Wilkinson, Julie Morton, Chris Burrows, Rod Bradley and the members named above, for their unfailing support and enthusiasm in tackling the various projects of the Village Appearance Group.

Third Village litter Pick

Sunday November 6th was a perfect sunny, autumnal day for the third Litter Pick organised by the Village Appearance Group. The photographs show the happy smiling faces of the volunteers from High Legh, assisted by members of staff from McDonalds.

Starting at one o’clock the litter pickers managed to collect nearly fifty bags of rubbish, including tyres, pots of paint, plumbing debris and a watering can! As a well earned ‘thank you’, the stalwart pickers of all ages enjoyed tea and homemade cakes in the Village Hall Meeting Room.

Once again, the Village Appearance Group has worked closely with McDonalds to organise this event. They kindly provided the posters, the advert in the Newsletter, the equipment, the manpower and for the removal of the rubbish. It is interesting to note that all of this rubbish will be recycled by McDonalds as part of their eco-friendly campaign.

Our next Litter Pick will be in the spring, although the A50 will be regularly cleared by staff from McDonalds as part of their normal route. The Village Appearance Group would welcome any help with this event as the old adage certainly rings true in that ‘many hands make light work'. Please contact Chris if you would like to know more about the VAG work.fun was had by all!!! every inch of hedgerow gets cleared

A rewarding day
